Homemade highlight reel launched Brady's career

In the beginning, all Tom Brady knew is he wanted to be a football player. That was it. He was nobody's hotshot quarterback prospect as a high school sophomore or even a junior. Baseball was his best sport. But he didn't love baseball the way he loved football after picking up the game as a benchwarmer for his high school's 0-8 freshman team. He didn't move particularly well then. He was tall and lanky and constantly was told he was slow afoot. But this is the best part: He didn't care.

Champs hang tough in Academic Decathlon

WESTWOOD - If 17-year-old Sam Farahmand of Woodland Hills were a football player, he would be Tom Brady, the New England Patriots quarterback who never seems to lose.

PHOENIX -- At this stage, with regard to Tom Brady, there are only degrees of greatness. There is Brady's current standing in the sports pantheon. And there is where...

You said it, Howie

It's the beginning of a four-hour pre-game show, and Howie Long says: "Hours seem like days." I know he's talking about waiting to play in the Super Bowl on the day of the game, but still ...# # #Words of wisdom from Jimmy Johnson on how to beat the Patriots: "Pound the rock to control the clock" and to get a pass rush on Tom Brady, "pretend you're going after Tom's girlfriend back there."# # #Best music so far: a snippet of the Raspberries' great "Go All the Way" during a piece on the undefeated 1972 Dolphins.Speaking of whom, Terry Bradshaw said, basically, shut up already: "You shouldn't be so selfish about it."# # #Wow, Ryan Seacrest played high school football. You see that tackle he made in that old film?OK, he's no John Lynch. And Lynch had a nice nugget during the discussion segment where he joined Tony Gonzalez, Shawne Merriman and Jason Witten. Lynch said during last year's Pro Bowl, Bill Belichick sent someone to spy on the NFC practice.# # #Who are those people who keep showing up over Johnson's shoulder and mugging for the camera?# # #Maybe Long's writers aren't on strike. Speaking of the lingering Spygate allegations, he said: "By the time we walk out of here today, Oliver Stone will be signed on to film the movie."

Pre-game thoughts, McNabb rumor

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported during today's pre-game show that the Ravens are thinking about making a move for Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. There wasn't great detail in his report, but Mortensen said any potential deal would have to involve the Ravens' first-round pick (No. 8 overall).I have a hard time believing the Eagles are going to unload McNabb, given how Philadelphia ended the season, but I guess you never know. There have been some other interesting nuggets during the six or seven hours of pre-game coverage:Earlier this week, I wrote about a prop bet that let you wager on who would score more points: Kobe Bryant in this afternoon's game against the Wizards or the Patriots. After the first half in Washington, it looked like Kobe would be a lock. He had 25 points at halftime. But Bryant added just five in the second half to finish with 30. You've gotta think the Patriots should eclipse that number.Anyone check out Keyshawn Johnson's scarf during ESPN's pre-game show? Very odd choice if you ask me. And did you get the impression that some of those guys might have been doing a little too much partying this week? A couple seemed to have hoarse voices. Don't forget there's a time difference, and I believe the pre-game programming began around 11 a.m. EST.According to FOX's Pam Oliver, the Giants watched a video montage of their three playoff games set to Green Day's "Time of your Life" last night during a team meeting. There's gotta be a joke there somewhere.ESPN had the Pony Express deliver the hosts' picks in an envelope. Guess they have to fill time somehow.Story lines that have been beaten into the ground: Eli Manning's transformation; are the Patriots the best team ever if they win; is Tom Brady the greatest quarterback ever; Tom Coughlin's having fun; Randy Moss' comeback. Feel free to add to the list.

We made it ...

... through another year's pre-game show. The last hour was supposed to be football-centric, which explains the Frank Caliendo-as-John Madden game pick and the Tom Brady-Terry Bradshaw yuk-athon interview.# # #Nice shot of Eli Manning running past Brady and trying to be friendly and Brady giving him the cold shoulder.# # #Another local connection: Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome was among the NFL-connected people reading the Declaration of Independence.
