Day 1 Roundup: Stars, stripes and pink eye?

Editors, celebrities, socialites and fashionistas braved the wet winter weather in the Big Apple all in the name of fabulous frocks for the kickoff of Fashion Week. It's all about being fashionably late this week, but here’s a handy dandy calendar of the shows. Designers have spent months, and many sleepless nights, bracing for the storm that is Fashion Week. Up-and-coming designer Chris Benz kept a diary leading up to the big show so that those outside the industry can get a feel for all that goes into this week. Speaking of behind-the-scenes, everyone knows the clothes are the main attraction in the tents, but every year, there are always a few models whose runway sashays steal the show. Check out the ones to watch here. Wonder if any of New York Magazine’s Top Ten are the same models who just came back from Brazil with pink eye? The day, and week, started off at the tents with Nautica’s menswear collection. Models showed off looks running the primary color gamut with hooded cable knits, sharp blazers and lots of stripes. In the front-row: Sex and the City's Mr. Big himself, Chris Noth. While not every designer can host their show at a swank eatery like Vera Wang did at Bobo yesterday (even serving up delish bites to attendees), the buzz surrounding the fall collections seems so sweet you can taste it. FashionWeekDaily.com called Rachel Roy's fall collection a Southwestern delight and compared Elie Tahari’s collection to 'a fuzzy champagne cocktail-cosmopolitan, urban, luxe.” Lacoste may be celebrating its 75th anniversary in this year, but don’t expect a big celebration at their show -- or A-listers. Apparently the team behind that ubiquitous little gator are declaring celebrities so last season. Lacoste designer Christophe Lemaire told Women’s Wear Daily: "We don't really care about personalities ... We feel it's a stupid game to play. There are so many famous people wearing Lacoste anyway, we don't need to pretend or show off." Stay tuned (and cross your fingers the forecast presents a sunnier disposition – at least for the sake of all those Choos and Manolos running around NYC) as Fashion Week continues through next Friday. --Rebecca HeslinPhoto by Rob Loud/Getty Images for IMG

In a shower of pink slips, US employers cut jobs last month for the first time in more than four years, the starkest signal yet that the economy is grinding to a halt if it hasn't already toppled into recession.
