Xstrata. BHP Billiton’s bid for Rio Tinto is forcing mining rivals to consider bulking up. And one of the most acquisitive of that lot isn’t backing down. Brazil’s Vale, whose CEO’s stated goal is to build the world’s largest mining company, is in negotiations to buy Swiss miner Xstrata that could result in a deal valued at as much as $90 billion. Such a deal would make Vale the world’s No. 1 miner by market capitalization.Rio Tinto. BHP, meanwhile, is unlikely to sweeten its $99 billion unsolicited proposal to acquire Rio by a Feb. 6 deadline, according to this Wall Street Journal article. BHP had little incentive to raise its bid, with Rio’s shares nearly 30% off their December highs and well below where they were when the BHP offer was unveiled. (See this Deal Journal post for more on that.) The move reflects the unease in global equity and credit markets, and may be meant to pressure Rio, which has refused to negotiate.Leveraged loans. The hope among many deal makers as 2007 came to an end was that banks would be able to dislodge many of the debt commitments clogging up their balance sheets in the new year. Getty Images confirmed a weekend New York Times report that the photo supplier, which could be valued at $1.5 billion, has hired Goldman Sachs Group to look for a buyer.EMI. Guy Hands, who runs British private-equity firm Terra Firma, is discovering that managing artists is lot different than managing planes. Terra Firma bought EMI for $6.2 billion last summer and since then many of the musicians signed with EMI have been less than pleased with the private-equity mogul, according to this WSJ article. Paul McCartney and Radiohead already have defected and the Rolling Stones may soon join them.Consolidated Media. Lachlan Murdoch and James Packer, two Australian media scions, are joining forces in a $2.91 billion deal to privatize Consolidated Media Holdings.Ventana Medical Systems. Swiss drug maker Roche agreed to purchase the US diagnostics maker for $3.4 billion, or $89.50 a share, ending nearly a year of wrangling. Roche initially offered $75 a share back in June. Microsoft. The tech behemoth is taking on VMware. Microsoft disclosed details of its plans to take on rivals in a hot field called virtualization, including the purchase of a Silicon Valley start-up business called Calista Technologies.Google. Microsoft’s rival, meanwhile, is sparring with European parliamentarians and privacy advocates over their efforts to have competition authorities consider the handling of personal information in its $3.1 billion takeover of rival DoubleClick, according to this Reuters article.Friends Provident. J.C. Flowers is mulling a move for the British insurer in a deal that could be valued at about $7.8 billion, according to this WSJ article. Flowers may have competition in the form of Swiss Re, the world’s biggest reinsurance company.
