Obama Hits the Heartland

Christopher Cooper in El Dorado, Kan., reports on the presidential race.Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius endorsed Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for president today, saying that her two children prompted her to do it. “My two sons have been driving me crazy,’’ said Sebelius, after emerging from the stage wings at a junior college gymnasium in the tiny burg of El Dorado, Kan. “I think right now, we are with the next president of the United States.’’Barack Obama speaks at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan. (Associated Press)In addition to Sebelius, Obama is supported by Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, who accompanied the campaign today. The Sebelius endorsement comes a day after she gave the Democratic rebuttal to President Bush’s State of the Union address and several members of the Kennedy clan, including longtime Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy, gave Obama their seal of approval. Though the Illinois Democrat has lagged behind rival New York Sen. Hillary Clinton in drawing nods from establishment politicians, Obama has been closing the gap in recent weeks. Besides Sebelius, Obama recently picked up an endorsement from Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, another governor from a red state that will be staging an election on Feb. 5, along with 21 others. The Clinton campaign said today it has gotten an endorsement from California Rep. Maxine Waters, an outspoken African-American congresswoman best known for her unswerving support of minority issues.Interestingly, Sen. Kennedy’s endorsement of Obama gives him the support of one of the most liberal Democrats in the Senate along with one of the most conservative: Sen. Ben Nelson, of Nebraska. Clinton today got the support of the other Sen. Nelson - Bill Nelson of Florida. Obama’s biggest endorser may also be one of his most retiring. Oprah Winfrey drew huge crowds in January when the two visited three early voting states. Obama said today he’s not sure when the entertainment maven might appear on the hustings again.Earlier in the day, Obama said he was disappointed in President Bush’s remarks about the economy in his State of the Union address last night, saying much of it amounted to “warmed-over Republican dogma.” During a chat with reporters on the flight to Kansas, Obama said that while Bush and Congress seemed willing to address short-term problems with the economy, he was “struck by the absence of any significant discussion at the state of the union last night about the long term.”Obama said short-term problems brought on by stagnating wages and rising prices led many Americans to overextend themselves by borrowing, often turning to risky loans. “Some of the current woes could have been anticipated,’’ he said.Like many in Washington, Obama stopped short of predicting a recession, saying he wanted to wait to see economic reports due out this week, as well as Fed action planned for tomorrow. “Clearly there’s a slowdown,’’ he said.Obama said long-term structural problems - the tax code, a poor education system and an incoherent energy policy that leaves the country beholden to foreign governments - will need to be fixed to bring long-term stability to the national economy.
