Microsoft’s offer for Yahoo is clearly the biggest news story of the day, overwhelming the buzz around the presidential election and the SocGen scandal. Drudgereport.com, for instance, leads with the Yahoo news, featuring an eerie photo of Web addicts at an Internet café.And what is Yahoo’s response? Well, a dog-riding rodeo monkey. Video of, yes, a dog-riding rodeo monkey named Whiplash gets top billing on Yahoo’s home page. There is scant mention of the $45 billion offer. Iraq, China, Britney Spears, and a crocodile fossil all get more play than Steve Ballmer and company.Ballmer has nowhere near the public profile of outgoing Chairman Bill Gates - and as a result, he may be best known for his 'monkey boy” routine, one of the first hugely viral videos passed around the Web. The 2001 performance shows Ballmer bouncing and jumping around a stage, screeching and whooping, doing his best Howard Dean times ten, trying to get Microsoft employees fired up. If you need any evidence that Yahoo avidly hates Microsoft and doesn’t want to do this deal, that should do it. Look for the company to scare up any competing bidder it can as a way to get the real monkey off its back.UPDATE:By 11:14, news of the deal had migrated to Yahoo’s home page.
