Schwarzenegger praises McCain in delivering endorsement

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger endorsed Sen. John McCain in the Republican presidential race Thursday, praising him as an extraordinary leader who can reach across the political aisle to get things done.

McCain Hangs With Moderates

Alex Frangos reports on the presidential race.John McCain picked up a couple of big endorsements in the past 24 hours from Rudy Giuliani and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Those nods will solidify McCain’s status with independents and moderate Republicans. Arnold Schwarzenegger endorsed John McCain today. AP Photo. But among core Republican and social conservative voters, seeing McCain today at a solar-panel manufacturer talking about global warming and standing aside two abortion rights moderates could depress their enthusiasm to get on the front-runner’s bandwagon.“I could never ever be anything but honored by the presence of these two great American heroes,” McCain said at the press conference announcing Schwarzenegger’s endorsement as Giuliani stood nearby. He batted down the notion that such nods will hurt him. “You will see a flood of endorsements across this country from both liberal and conservative,” he said. “We need all parts of our party together if we’re going to win in November. I believe our party is beginning to realize that.”But he also understands he has to win over a skeptical Republican base to ensure a robust turnout in November, when it’s all but certain that Democrats will be at their highest energy level in decades. His formula for doing that is to emphasize what is probably his strongest suit with that wing of the party: a hawkish foreign policy. “I’m confident that the majority of conservatives in my party, the No. 1 priority is the threat of radical Islamic extremism. I believe that I can get a significant and overwhelming majority of those people who are members of our party to join together with all of us in a big tent party.”

McCain: Chuck Norris had better watch out for 'The Terminator'

Jokes were not surprisingly flying last night when Republican presidential front-runner Sen. John McCain stopped by NBC-TV's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Here's McCain on what his latest big-name endorser -- California governor and former Hollywood Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger...

"Let's Grow Up, Conservatives"

The Weekly Standard - The story from California last week was bound to alarm conservatives. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger endorsed John McCain for president at a solar technology plant. Rudy Giuliani, who's also backing McCain, joined the lovefest as an uninvited but very welcome guest. And McCain talked about the Republican party as a "big tent," a phrase often used as code for appealing to moderates and ignoring conservatives.

Morning Buzz: Jan. 31, 2008

One day after picking up the endorsement of former presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani, John McCain is expected to receive the endorsement today of another high-profile Republican: California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Aides say the announcement will be made at a news conference in Los Angeles.

Olson’s Backing Could Help McCain Among Conservatives

Sara Murray reports on the presidential race.Former Solicitor General Theodore Olson threw his support behind Sen. John McCain today in the latest of a string of high-profile endorsements for the Republican presidential candidate.Olson’s endorsement could help ease anxieties some conservatives feel about the Arizona senator when it comes to choosing judicial nominees and on issues such as campaign finance reform.McCain“Given that Ted Olson is such a prominent and well respected consverative lawyer whose conservative credentials are in no doubt, my sense is some conservatives who might otherwise have some reservations about McCain might have, in some considerable measure, their concerns eased,” said Eugene Volokh, a conservative law professor at University of California, Los Angeles School of Law.Olson served as assistant attorney general in the Reagan administration and was appointed solicitor general in 2001 by President Bush after he successfully represented Bush the candidate in the Supreme Court case Bush v. Gore.Conservatives have criticized McCain’s proposed campaigned finance reforms, saying they’re a violation of free speech. Olson’s support could help quell that fear. And some have worried about his selection of judges, too.“I think especially conservatives who worry about John McCain on judges will probably say ‘huh it sounds like these are the sorts of people he might nominate,’” Volokh said.Olson addressed exactly that in a statement released by the McCain camp. “John McCain has a deep-rooted conservative philosophy and I trust him to appoint strict constructionists, like Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Scalia, Thomas and Alito, to judicial positions,” he said.Earlier this week, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani both threw their support behind McCain, raising concerns that support from such moderates might hurt his standing among conservatives.
